New Week, New Book (8/14/17)
Hosted by The Book Date
August may turn out to be a sort of "catch up" month; without as many new releases to gobble up, I've been exploring some options that I've been meaning to read, as well as recommendations from reading friends.
As I mentioned in last week's post, I was very involved in Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward; I finished it rather early in the week and will share more about it soon. It is definitely an emotional, somewhat heavy, read and entirely worth the time and effort.
To follow, I knew that I would likely need something a little less taxing; book loving friends to the rescue! My three go-to gals for book recommendations, when I'm stumbling a bit, are Sarah, Catherine and Susie; they were all three, all at the same time, talking about Emma in the Night by Wendy Walker.
I couldn't turn the pages fast enough on this one and found myself looking for any and all opportunities to pick it up and keep going! While, at times, it reminded me of a highly entertaining spring read, The Roanoke Girls, the story is completely unique and I did not anticipate the way it would end! Kudos, Wendy Walker!
Just as I was finishing Emma in the Night, I received a notification that my library hold for We are Never Meeting in Real Life by Samantha Irby was available. After a rather tough week at work, this was the perfect weekend break! Not only are these essays hilarious, they are also heartfelt and thought-provoking; I truly enjoyed this collection and would love to read more of her work. This would likely be a great audio selection, as well.
Feeling kind of stuck and unsure of what to read next, I saw an Instagram post by my friend Sarah (mentioned above); she is working on her own home library and added one of her favorites to the shelf recently, titled If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio. I'd completely forgotten about this one, but truly wished I'd remembered to put it on my list, so I decided to purchase a copy (it was not available through my library) and give it a try.
Oooooh, y'all! It's so good! I had to go in to work for a few hours yesterday, so I didn't get to read quite as much as I would've liked, but I know I'll move through this one quickly!
I've still got these three on my library hold list; what are you reading?!
